Custom Sheet Metal Enclosures Melbourne: From Design to Powder Coat
How commercial and industrial buyers in Melbourne specify, order and take delivery of custom sheet metal enclosures — panels, apertures, finishes and what to include in your brief.

Custom sheet metal enclosures are the housings that keep electronics, controls, kiosk displays and industrial equipment protected, professional-looking and installation-ready. If you are specifying an enclosure in Melbourne, this guide covers what to include in your brief, what the fabrication process looks like, and what you can expect from a full-service Moorabbin workshop.

What is a custom sheet metal enclosure?
A custom enclosure is a fabricated metal housing made to your drawing — not a catalogue box. It may be:
- An electrical cabinet housing switchgear, PLCs or distribution boards
- A kiosk housing for a digital display, payment terminal or wayfinding screen
- An equipment guard or cover for industrial machinery
- A control panel enclosure for a custom automation build
- An architectural housing — exterior-grade, powder coated to a specified colour
Unlike off-the-shelf enclosures, custom fabricated units match your exact dimensions, aperture positions, material, and finish.
Why Melbourne commercial buyers go custom
Standard enclosures from a catalogue rarely fit perfectly. Buyers choose custom sheet metal enclosure fabrication in Melbourne when:
- Screen or component sizes do not match standard cutout patterns
- Powder coat colour must match a brand standard (RAL, Dulux or Interpon code)
- IP or structural rating requires a specific material and wall thickness
- Mounting is non-standard — flush wall, floor-standing pylon, rack or surface
- Multiple apertures are needed precisely positioned for screens, locks, vents and cabling

The fabrication process at our Moorabbin workshop
At Orion Metal Industries we take an enclosure from drawing to delivery without leaving Moorabbin:
1. Drawing review
Send your PDF, DXF, DWG or STEP file. We check material, wall thickness, bend allowances, aperture positions and any special requirements before quoting. Quotes returned within 24 hours.
2. Laser cutting
The flat pattern is cut on our CNC fibre laser to ±0.1 mm accuracy. Apertures, fixing holes, louvres and cable entries are cut in the same program as the outer profile — no secondary punching required.
3. Press brake bending
Flat blanks are formed into the enclosure body on our press brake. Flanges, corners, return lips and mounting tabs are formed to the specified angles.
4. Welding and assembly
Seams, brackets and internal mounting rails are welded or fastened. Access doors, hinges, locks and any hardware specified in your drawings are fitted before finishing.
5. In-house powder coating
The assembled enclosure is prepared and powder coated in our on-site booth. We match Dulux, Interpon and RAL colour references. Standard gloss, satin and matt finishes are available.
6. Dispatch
Enclosures are packed and dispatched to Melbourne, Victoria, and nationally. For repeat orders we hold program and colour records.

What to include in your enclosure brief
To get an accurate quote, include the following:
Dimensions - Overall external height × width × depth (or internal if critical) - Wall thickness — typically 1.5 mm, 2 mm or 3 mm mild steel or zincanneal for standard enclosures
Apertures and penetrations - Screen cutout size and position (with tolerances if critical) - Ventilation — louvres, mesh, or blank with external ventilation - Cable entry — gland positions, conduit entry or slots - Door or access panel — hinged, removable, or no door
Material and finish - Mild steel, galvanised, zincanneal, stainless or aluminium - Powder coat colour code (Dulux, Interpon or RAL) or provide a physical sample - Gloss / satin / matt preference - Indoor or outdoor exposure
Quantity and delivery - Prototype quantity vs production quantity (we quote both) - Required delivery date and delivery address
Common Melbourne enclosure applications we fabricate
- Digital kiosk housings for shopping centres, transport hubs and government facilities
- Wayfinding pylon enclosures for commercial precincts
- Electrical and control panel enclosures for manufacturing and utilities
- Outdoor equipment housings — powder coated for UV and weather exposure
- Architectural metalwork — custom profile housings for fitout and commercial interior
See our products page for examples of kiosk and wayfinding enclosures we have produced, and our projects gallery for fabricated panels, frames and custom metalwork.
